Tryon Festival Theatre
The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when the legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko realized his vision for extracting the finest elements of the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies and infusing them into an independent entity that would unite dancers from across Russia to celebrate the great repertory of classical dance. In addition to two European tours and performances in Turkey, Japan, Korea, and Singapore, the Moscow Festival Ballet has also been a frequent visitor to the United States, arriving in Champaign-Urbana three times in the last eight years to offer Krannert Center audiences dazzling traditional performances of Giselle and Cinderella, as well as a new production of Don Quixote based in the traditions of Marius Petipa.
Radchenko, who also leads the Russian National Ballet Theatre, now returns with a stunning production of the last ballet of the romantic era, Coppélia. Come experience a magical story, based on two tales by E.T.A. Hoffmann (of The Nutcracker fame), that offers entry into the fable of the quirky inventor Doctor Coppélius, his amazing dancing doll, and its effect on a small peasant village.
