Premiered in 1786, it remains a timeless endorsement of common sense and forgiveness. In the midst of a class struggle, servants outwit aristocrats and women outdo men in Mozart’s witty upending of social conventions. In typical operatic fashion, several cases of mistaken identity are resolved, humiliation teaches the offenders, and good humor restores order.
