School of Music Opera Series | Imagined as another piece suitable for the newly formed English Opera Group, Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring is a mature and hilarious work regarded as one of the greatest comic operas of all time. With a large cast of deftly drawn characters from suffocatingly conventional Suffolk, this charming romp pokes gentle fun at odd man out Albert Herring. Because no young women are deemed suitable for the coveted role, the titular character is selected to be May King, and his unexpected response to his new title leads to topsy-turvy action, delightfully witty songs, rapid-fire dialogue, and a light-hearted examination of society’s constraints.
