Great Hall Series | The extraordinary chemistry between the “sympathetic, fiercely intelligent” Michael Tilson Thomas (San Francisco Chronicle) and his adventurous musicians has propelled the San Francisco Symphony in its evolution into an “artistic beacon” (The New York Times). Since it was conceived in the rubble of the calamitous 1906 earthquake, the ensemble has been enlivening and enriching the orchestral world through its “sumptuously colorful” sound, “meticulously balanced” programs, and “urgent, intense . . . ravishing playing” (The New York Times).
Jascha Heifetz, Itzhak Perlman, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Joshua Bell rose to the challenge, and now Christian Tetzlaff, Musical America’s 2005 Instrumentalist of the Year, will undertake the balletic leaps from dignified lyricism to mournful heartbrokenness to jubilant abandon in Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major, Op. 35. The dance theme continues with Ravel’s Noble and Sentimental Waltzes, and Liszt’s Tasso: Lament and Triumph, a heroic musical biography of the 16th-century Italian poet Torquato Tasso, extends the Romantic flavor with its influences of both Goethe and Byron. Post-scriptum, a new piece by Victor Kissine that was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, will complete this richly conceived performance.
