Itzhak Perlman, violin, and Rohan De Silva, piano

Sunday, October 3, 2010, at 7:30pm | Foellinger Great Hall

Great Hall Series | Itzhak Perlman holds many trademarks: “the opulent sound, the silken tone, the supple bow arm, the effortless
technique” (The New York Times). He has been at the side of several presidents: playing at Barack Obama’s inauguration, performing at a state dinner for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip hosted by George W. Bush and Laura Bush, accepting the National Medal of Arts from Bill Clinton, and earning the Medal of Liberty from Ronald Reagan. And in addition to his four Emmy and 15 Grammy wins, he was a 2003 Kennedy Center Honoree.

He is an expert in numerous musical styles: the Baroque playfulness of Vivaldi, the classical magnificence of Beethoven, the romantic passion of Brahms, the joy of klezmer masterpieces, the rhythmic phrasing of Spanish dances, the improvisations of jazz, and the haunting solos from Schindler’s List. And his charisma is undeniable, particularly when he teams with his longtime collaborator Rohan De Silva, the Sri Lankan pianist who has also played with Joshua Bell, Pinchas Zukerman, and Gil Shaham. For adoring, cheering fans—including those at Krannert Center for his six appearances here since 1974—Perlman is “as good as gold” (Chicago Sun-Times).
