Great Hall Series | Larger-than-life conductors like Richard Strauss, incandescent soloists like Sergei Prokofiev, and resoundingly vigorous composers like Gustav Mahler—the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra has made history with them all. From acclaimed performances to premieres, this ensemble—the oldest symphonic group in Russia—has been forging the future of music since 1882. Equally confident when celebrating the coronation of Nicholas II at the Kremlin and the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s birth in Vienna, this orchestra has also graced the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Barbican, La Scala, and Carnegie Hall.
Under Yuri Temirkanov—the legendary conductor of the Kirov Opera and Ballet—the musicians have set the standard for interpretations of pieces by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. Tonight, they’ll demonstrate their trenchant take on the vitality and tender mysteries of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture, Op. 36. Driving yet subtle, Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 98 by Brahms will unleash these dexterous musicians into swells of mystical grandeur.
Honored with an invitation to join the White House Music Series in 2009, cellist Alisa Weilerstein has captured the world by “careening from orchestral blasts of rage to quiet wit and the hushed ecstasy of stroked harmonics” and by flexing her “natural affinity” for seemingly any musical style (New York Magazine). On Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, Op. 107, she and the orchestra will bare the assertiveness, agitation, and haunting lyricism of this life-affirming work.
