Classical Mix Series | The musicians of the Ebène Quartet—Pierre Colombet and Gabriel Le Magadure on violin, Mathieu Herzog on viola, and Raphaël Merlin on cello—play with “refinement and poise” and “a rare degree of expressive subtlety, blended sonorities and electrifying joy” (The Times, London). The group’s CD Quatuor Ebène and its “almost palpable sense of wonder” earned Gramophone’s praise and 2008 Recording of the Year honors. At home with pieces by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Haydn, Brahms, and Beethoven, the quartet moves just as effortlessly into jazz tunes from Chick Corea, improvisation, and music from Pulp Fiction. These players have performed at Vienna’s Musikverein, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Wigmore Hall, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. At Krannert Center, they’ll present Fauré’s String Quartet in E Minor, Op. 121, Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, Op. 80. You’ll be drawn in by a performance that’s“pulsing with life” (The Times, London), and you’ll be riveted by this quartet’s “spellbinding magic” (The New York Times).
