Pacifica Quartet Beethoven Cycle Part 2
Thursday, November 10, 2011, at 7:30pm |
Foellinger Great Hall
Commanding “musical gifts held in ideal balance,” the Pacifica Quartet prevails with concertgoers and critics no matter what it undertakes (Washington Post). This season, Simin Ganatra, Sibbi Bernhardsson, Masumi Per Rostad, and Brandon Vamos return to the mammoth scope of Beethoven’s complete string quartets they last conquered during the 2007-08 season during traditional concerts, performances at Napa Valley wineries, and lunchtime conversations amid the music at Columbia University. These 16 quartets written over nearly 30 years encompass the Classical style of Beethoven’s early pieces, the budding Romanticism of his middle years, and the mature complexity of his last modern-feeling works. His music has swelled into an entire language of shifting, restraining, railing, blazoning dynamism. In the hands of the Pacifica Quartet members, the music is sung with four voices, one voice, their rapport “a thing of wonder” (Chicago Tribune).
In part 2, the Pacifica Quartet will take on String Quartets No. 3 in D Major, Op. 18, No. 3; No. 9 in C Major,Op. 59, No. 3, “Razumovsky”; and No. 12 in E-flat Major, Op. 127.
