ELLNORA: Bill Frisell with film by Bill Morrison: The Great Flood

ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival | Deluge, torrent, overflow, cascade. A flood razes the past, washing space and time clean, yet leaves behind debris, loss, and a moment for change and renewal.

In 1927, the Mississippi River surged over its banks after heavy rains the previous summer set it pawing at its limits by the time the 15-inch downpours of April hit. Levees across the Midwest and the plains failed, as water pummeled communities along the shores. A mass exodus downstream carried the Delta blues northward, where it would become rock and roll.

In the eyes of Obie Award winner Bill Morrison, the pock-marked documentary footage from that era bears witness to the carnage and valiant struggles of lives in metamorphosis. ELLNORA alum Bill Frisell—who “coaxes and slams his hovering split-toned ax into shapes of things to come” (Spin)—walks the roots music and down-home blues of the South on their journey through R&B to rock as he conveys the memories of people beset by uncontrollable forces. In this world premiere co-commissioned by Krannert Center, The Great Flood touches history and nature through film, music, and the barrage of humanity’s power.

The Great Flood was commissioned by Krannert Center; Wexner Center for the Arts at the Ohio State University; Carnegie Hall; Symphony Center Presents, Chicago; and Hopkins Center, Dartmouth College.

The Great Flood was commissioned through Meet the Composer’s Commissioning Music/USA program, which is made possible by generous support from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, the Ford Foundation, the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Helen F. Whitaker Fund.

Additional support was made possible by USA Projects, an online initiative of United States Artists.
