Johannes Brahms’ Instrumental Music with Piano: Ian Hobson, piano

Sunday, March 31, 2013, at 7:30pm | Smith Memorial Hall (805 S. Mathews, Urbana)

Renowned pianist Ian Hobson is currently a professor in the Center for Advanced Study and the music director and conductor of Sinfonia da Camera. Hobson’s performances and recordings span the piano repertoire from the London Pianoforte School to the complete cycle of Beethoven piano sonatas, all of the Brahms variations for piano, Bach’s “Goldberg” Variations, the Chopin-Godowsky etudes, Rachmaninoff’s early works, and solo piano transcriptions to contemporary pieces written for him by Ridout, Lees, Liptak, and Gardner. In his demanding project for 2012-13, he performs works by Brahms that feature the piano as a solo instrument or as part of an ensemble.

Ian Hobson welcomes Andrés Cárdenes (violin), Csaba Erdélyi (viola), and Ko Iwasaki (cello) for this concert:

· Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 100
· Piano Quartet No. 2 in A Major for Piano, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 26

The guest performers and concert programs for this series are subject to change.
